Vida's Ark was founded in 2007 as a shelter to provide safe, supportive living conditions while teaching young mothers life and parenting skills to become self-sufficient, educated, healthy and teach them how to be parents themselves. Our home provides a place for hope, healing and restoration.
The Mission of Vida's Ark is to assist homeless teen mothers, and their children, by providing a safe, supportive and nurturing home; while teaching them the skills to become self-sufficient and to complete their high school education.
The Lighthouse Community Resource Center is a place where teen parents can find resources to provide for themselves and their children in a positive, safe encouraging environment. Some of those resources include: children clothing, shoes, diapers, baby food, toys, books, infant furniture, hygiene products, as well as referrals to parenting/life-skill classes, counseling and community agencies.
Dear FriendsOf Vida’s Ark,
It is with mixed emotions that we write to you. For the past 10 years, like the young mothers we serve, we have experienced pregnancy, birth, and the various stages, newborn, toddler and adolescence. If you have ever been a parent you know the emotions that are attached to each stage.
During pregnancy we were blessed to have an amazing board of directors, along with dozens of volunteers and the community organizations and businesses who came along side us to grow and nurture our home. Then came our first mother,
Kandie Smith whose commitment was to make sure our newborn was fed. During the toddler stage with energy and hard work mothers Sue Seiler and Shelley Thornton came bringing more growth and much laughter and tears! In between house mom’s both Hope and Julie would spend weeks living at the house and wondering how they do it!
The adolescent stage came quickly and mother Donna Cologna has been at the “helm” of Vida’s Ark for over 3 years. Although each stage has its own challenges, with the hard work and dedication of our Moms providing love and dedication, our girls and children would not have a home!
Just like the stages of development, we find ourselves in a season of change and for many reasons are ready to pass the torch. As of September 1 st , 2017, Transitional Youth (TY) founded by Bert Waugh has offered to take care of our child. Nothing will change for the home. Donna will remain the houseparent, the name will be the same, and the current residents will stay.
Our work is not done as TY will be taking over the financial responsibility and include Vida’s Ark in all their fundraising. They need your support!! If you would like to learn more about them please visit their website at https://transitionalyouth.org/.
Thank you all for sharing in this wonderful journey! We could never have done it without you!
